possible problems with our film location and local police.

It has been brought to my attention that we need to ask permission of the land owners to film on there property and therefore will be drafting a letter to them and will be posting it on here as soon as we are able.secondally because we are using a fake gun the local police have to be informed so residents dont call them and tell them we have a gun and just stops and misunderstandings.

Main project outline

Above is one of our initial ideas in detail. It shows almost every aspect of things we have to take into consideration before the cretaing of our film. We created this diea from developing our other intial ideas until we came up with one we all agreed and felt was a good and inventful idea to go ahead with.

vantage point, action thriller, same genre and some ideas as our film evaluated.

Vantage point
Trailer
Action/thriller

Codes and conventions

The film trailer starts with an establishing wide shot which sets the scene for the film and mood of the film.there is a straight cut between each scene and goes to a longshot of the importanat figure arriving at the speech location. the lighting used here is mainly key and filler lighting to show the bright city and the presidant arriving. There is straight cuts between two scenes which show snipers on the roof tops which highlights the high security and risk of the presidant talking about terriorist organisations. The presidant then takes to the stage and gives a speech to lots of people there is lots of diagetic sounds including the sound of the crowd and some non diagetic sounds with a voice over telling us of what the presidant is talking about.. Also the lighting in this scene is key and filling a the filler ligh adds a darker coulor ot the scene showing the dark mood. there is a longshot of the presidant and then straight cuts to other characters which show there view point of the assination. the director uses close ups of the 7 characters to give the viewer detail visual descriptions so they know all the characters and there points of view.Through the build-up of tension and the use of big name actors it is the thriller genre at its best especially with the well timed calm and then chaotic moments of the trailer.

Analysing films with simliar genres

The Godfather opening scene.

Cime/thriller genre

Codes and Conventions
Audio codes, the opening scene is full of mainly speech. The characters also have italian accents. there is imited background noise and speech directed  towards  an unknown character which turns out (3.08) to be the mafia don.there is a silence when the don is thinking about the proposal to add suspense.
technical codes, in the opening scene there are several camera shots , the first camera shot used is the over shoulder shot which is used to shows the character is talking  to a unknown character , shown as a dark shadow . Also another camera shot used is the close up of the don which shows in great detail who he is and is useful as it is the main character in the godfather. the lighting is very dark to add to the crime thriller genre effect.
symbolic codes in the opening scene of the godfather the clothing is formal dress to show the characters are gangsters and show the severity of the situation. also the props are limited with a dog being used as a typical accessories for a gangsters.
Editing
in this clip there is a variety of editing and adapting.firstly the director has used different camera angles so has cut each shot.Secondally they have edited the lighting by using filler, key and back lighting to add the darker effect int he opening scene of the godfather.

Code and Convention

What is a code and convention ?
code and conventions are vital in films and consist of these main things : music, script, costumes, camera angles and framing, are used. However these are only a few examples of film codes. It is the way that these are used which is known as conventions that helps us understand which characters are playing each role in the story. Directors can use codes and conventions to encourage us to like or dislike a character and also help us to understand how important each character is in the story. for example if a character was walking into a bank and tense dark music was playing we would expect that character to be bad.

what codes and conventions are used in film openings?
There are three main tpes of codes and conventions those are
  • audio codes,( the words that are spoken, how they are spoken and silence in the film) .
  • symbolic codes, (this is the overall look of a character eg accessories and makeup )
  • technical codes, (these are the camera angles lighting framing and shot duration )

Media studies assignment

The first camera angle i chose from this trailer  is a close up  ( 0.09)
  • the close up shows the bank robbers in detail which becomes more important as the film goes along and we get to see who the robbers are.
The second camera angle i chose was a extreme close up (0.12)
  • This shows one of the main characters that the film is based upon and shows him in great detail so the view can get to know all the character well before watching the film.

The third camera angle i chose was a over the shoulder shot (0.40)
  • This shows a conversation between tommy and turkish the main characters in the film
The last camera and i used was a two shot (0.54)

prelimilary excersise continuity

In fiction, continuity  is consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the reader or viewer over some period of time. It is of relevance to several media.
Continuity is particularly a concern in the production of film and television due to the difficulty of rectifying an error in continuity after shooting has wrapped up. It also applies to other art forms, including novels, comics, anime, videogames and animation, though usually on a smaller scale.

Prelimary excersise shot and reverse shot

Shot reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other.

prelimary exercise match on action

Match on action means when something happens in the scene then whenthere is a cut the same piece of action must be going on this is an example on continuity editing and is very important as it helps the audience understand what is going on.

prelimary 180 degree rule

In filmmaking, the 180° rule is a basic guideline that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line. The new shot, from the opposite side, is known as a reverse angle.
